Becoming Great

Becoming Great – Fall Event Thursday Morning Presentation

By John Kennedy

As the dust from The Fall Event settles and the lessons and blessings found in Cincy are applied back home, I thought it important to share the message I delivered on the final day to all of The Garden Center Group members who may not have attended or had to catch a flight home.

Ultimately, the presentation centered around the common threads of excellence found inside of great leaders, athletes, business owners, and garden centers in the world. Three attributes that they all share which place them at the top of their game—the best of the best!

At the very top is one clear and over-reaching element to their greatness—Selfless Exceptionalism.

And selfless doesn’t mean that they think less of themselves…it means that they think of themselves less. They are servant leaders. They place the needs of others ahead of themselves and have a humble approach to leadership and life.

They also seem to share key characteristics that make them great. Those attributes are as follows:

First, they have FOCUS.
They set specific goals that are measurable and tangible (able to be seen daily).
They are always self-referenced and looking to compete against themselves (not others) and look to improve over what they accomplished yesterday. Lastly, they are striving for growth and excellence so their goals are often times difficult (think stretch goals!).

Second. They are driven by PASSION.
They have both ownership for themselves and accountability baked into the equation of excellence. They create incentives to keep them engaged in the journey of greatness and are also fostering fun as they build the path ahead each and every day.

Third. They have a certain MENTAL TOUGHNESS.
As I enjoy hearing about my Baltimore Orioles team, they often say, “This team has no quit!” These great folks have a deep sense of perseverance, perform well under pressure, always have a Plan B, and have a unique depth of trust in their own talent.

Although their greatness is a balance of both nature and nurture, their intense level of want separates them from the rest. When asking the audience at The Fall Event if they feel that they each have greatness within them, 100% answered yes!

Everyone is great at something…so there is only one thing left to do—Go Out. Be Great!
