The GREEN Escape

The Great Green Escape

by Danny Summers

Depending on your preference of movie genre (and maybe the number of "seasons") you may recognize the original title here. It takes us back to one of the most iconic war movies, originally released in 1963. It featured a star-studded cast including Steve McQueen along with James Garner, Richard Attenborough, James Donald, Charles Bronson, Donald Pleasence, James Coburn, David McCallum, and many more. But that's not what I was thinking of when this title idea came to mind.

Following the spring of 2020 and 2021, many of us most likely thought this would be the spring and year when many of your Guests would resume traveling and enjoying vacations in far-away places – as they did during pre-COVID seasons. But in recent months we have seen gas prices, air fares and most other costs jump more than we can remember in decades. Then, when you consider the last 3 weeks of war in Ukraine, ideas of traveling, especially abroad, may be put on the shelf once more.

This can very well be another season of staying close to home.

It's time for... "The GREEN Escape!"

Just like spring of 2020, to once again find peace and joy in the garden offers a welcomed escape from the news of the day. It doesn't take long to get there. And once we are there, we begin to feel more relaxed and at ease. Once again, you have what can help your Guests find peace and joy right in their backyards.

We Already Knew This - We Need Nature!

Last week, Rich Clark (Clark Farms in Rhode Island) sent me a link to a story in NPR and Washington Post titled, 'Doctors in Canada can now prescribe national park passes to patients.'

It is a real story and it has references and quotes from Florence Williams and her 'The Nature Fix' book. Doctors are doing this. It says, "Studies have shown that time in nature can lead to a range of benefits, from lower stress hormones and heart rate variability to higher self esteem among children. One found that nature or pleasant urban settings helped amplify the effects of exercise alone. Spending time in nature supercharges the benefits.” See the article by clicking on the image above.

Maybe you can encourage your local doctors to prescribe trips to your 'Nature Center'. It can be a combination of Nature Therapy and Shopping Therapy in one!
