20/20 Vision

20/20 Vision

by Danny Summers

Twenty-twenty vision. It is something everyone wants but often it is not what we get.

The Merriam-Webster dictionary says twenty-twenty vision definition is "Good vision : the ability to see without glasses."

The American Optometric Association says, "20/20 vision is a term used to express normal visual acuity (the clarity or sharpness of vision) measured at a distance of 20 feet. If you have 20/20 vision, you can see clearly at 20 feet. If you have 20/100 vision, it means that you must be as close as 20 feet to see what a person with normal vision can see at 100 feet."

In the simplest terms, you might say, "Seeing what others don't or can't."

The term 20/20 vision is a good way to describe the vision to see where you want be in coming years, whether your work, career, or your business.

I often quote Simon Sinek in the "Quote of the Week" here in GROUPtalk because I believe he has some unique ways to inspire leadership and vision. I found a short 4-minute video of Simon sharing his ideas for "The Vision Test". In this message Simon lists 3 Things that Make a MEANINGFUL Vision: Resilient, Inclusive, and Service-Oriented. He goes on to give details of each of these attributes. I encourage you to watch this quick message from him. As you watch Simon's message, be sure to consider your work or business. How are you positioning it as you craft your vision?

The 20/20 vision title also reminds me of what began in the fall of 2011, when Robert Hendrickson called Karen and I to discuss the idea of turning over the day-to-day management of The Group. His vision was to free up he and Wendy from The Group administrative work and let him concentrate on just consulting (as much as he wanted to do). They had a plan. I believe they had 20/20 vision of what they wanted to do to begin to redirect and allocate their time to do other things that were important to them. This is a great example of 20/20 vision and transitioning a business.

This same vision should be applied to your work or business. The longer the timeline of the vision the more flexible the plan can be. If you were with us at The Fall Event 2021, you heard some details of the transitioning process. Our Group Team of Service Providers has been discussing this topic and you will be hearing more on this subject in the weeks or months ahead.

The story of Robert transitioning even continues this week here in GROUPtalk as he shares details with you below. This gives us the opportunity to honor all the work and vision he and Wendy have given in creating and building The Garden Center Group. Karen and I are thankful to have received that call in 2011 and to have Robert and Wendy's confidence to turn over the care of The Group to us since that time. As we continue our Group efforts today, we do so standing on their shoulders. And I believe their vision for The Group surely fits Simon's Vision Test... Resilient, Inclusive, and Service-Oriented.

Speaking of resilience and service, I am reminded of how successfully you have navigated the COVID-19 storm. And while The Group serves you, our Group Centers, I know you are also Servants to your communities. Just reflect back on what it has meant to your communities to have you and your Center available to them the past 19 months!

This is a great time for all of us to ask ourselves... What is our vision... Is it 20/20?

If you want to learn more about either of The Group Programs, give me a call or email. Sharing is at the heart of The Group and your ideas are very important.
