Learning - following your passion!

Learning - following your passion!

by Danny Summers

Last week you may recall I shared some ideas on learning being a life-long experience. Learning is a process we all are participants in. Whether you describe it as a class, a moving sidewalk, or even journey, each of us are responsible for making the decision if and when to stop learning. As I gave several famous quotes last week, the one from Albert Einstein said, “Intellectual growth should commence at birth and cease only at death.” I believe we should awake every morning with the goal or passion to learn something new today.

A few weeks back I saw a promotion for a new online class taught by Ron Howard. You know. Opie Taylor, Sheriff Andy Taylor's son, and Aunt Bea's great nephew, many of us grew up with on The Andy Griffith Show and later on Happy Days. There is no room for doubt that Ron Howard, beginning his acting career at about 6 years old has a great span of learning. Since the move to directing, Ron Howard has produced some amazing movies. Just stop a minute to think about Apollo 13, The Di Vinci Code, Backdraft and The Grinch movies. Wow! So, now Ron Howard is teaching an online class in directing. It is part of a series called Masterclass.

You are probably wondering where is he going with this... right?

In Ron Howard's preview he begins to talk about "the story." And it brought me back to thinking about how our own Robert Hendrickson directs our centers to tell their story. Here's a few quotes from Ron's preview:

  • Some say there are only 7 stories. Well I believe there maybe only one story. [Your story]
  • We all understand stories. And we all have the instinct to direct [tell a story].
  • But what we have to do is backup that instinct with something called craft.
  • You are the editor-in-chief of your story.
  • Ultimately, you are the story teller [of your story].

At this point I encourage you to spend 2 minutes and hear Ron Howard's complete preview... CLICK HERE or on image above. (But if you do, come back and finish these thoughts!)

As you read his quotes above (or hear him in the preview) you can easily see and hear Robert's voice as well. We see it in Robert's actions as he helps our centers "craft" their story in their marketing and promotions. Robert's teaching leads us to be story-tellers instead of discounters!

You are most likely wondering where I am going on this... right?

New Ways to Follow Your Passion
So what is an area of opportunity for you today? What are you passionate about? You can find ways to learn and feed that passion. For instance, if you haven't already explored the Masterclass site featuring Ron Howard's class, you need to do so. You can take Ron's class for a mere $80. Or you can subscribe to the All-Access subscription for $180/year. Now most of the Masterclass subjects are in the Arts. But, writing, photography, and others are very much about telling your story and I believe can help us do just that. There are several cooking classes, areas of design, and much more. All of which you can take on your schedule. It is pretty amazing and I hope you will take some time to explore this site. Karen and I have subscribed and already see several classes we each want to take. Masterclass.com

Being creative in our work may mean expanding our abilities, learning new things, trying new things. There are many areas of learning that can help us in our work. For instance, I did a quick search for online learning for Nutrition and found a site called alison.com which is all FREE ONLINE learning. They have several classes on NUTRITION that could help us tell better nutrition stories about gardening.

And of course if you want to become better at almost any computer software, Linda.com is the best place to start. For as little as $25 a month, you pick the subject and you have a series of classes and topics for each area, such as Adobe Photoshop or (Steve Bailey's favorite) Microsoft Excel!

And I have to also spotlight our own John Kennedy's phenomenal video series for Leadership and Team Building. You have a special off for John Kennedy - on demand at 50% savings for The Group! Check it out here!

We shouldn't have excuses for things we have a passion for

... should we?

Will we start today to be determined to be on a new learning path, a mission, a trek?

The clock is ticking.

Let's get started today to... follow your passion!

 Danny
