Why KidsGardening - Why Now

Getting the Next Generation Engaged in Gardening is More Important Than Ever

Since 1982, when KidsGardening launched the first school gardening grant, their driving mission at KidsGardening is the idea that every child deserves the opportunity to learn through the garden.

Today, many educators have shifted to place-based education - of which garden-based learning is a part. Place-based education is hands-on, real world learning that uses the local environment to help kids understand the natural world around them and their place in it.  And we know there’s no better place to do that than in a garden.

Getting kids engaged in the garden is more important than ever:
-   children ages 10 to 16 now spend, on average, only 12.6 minutes per day in vigorous physical activity outdoors;
-   nearly 18% of all children and teens in the United States are obese, and since 1980, the number has almost tripled, and;
-   tweens spend at least six hours per day, on average, on social media.

KidsGardening has been measuring the benefits of garden-based education.

For 35 years, KidsGardening has led the school gardening movement and started in 1982, as an initiative of the National Gardening Association (NGA.)   In 2016 KidsGardening re-launched as an independent nonprofit with a renewed commitment to getting more kids learning through the garden. In 2016 we delivered the benefits of garden-based learning to more than 34,000 children across the country directly, and indirectly to hundreds of thousands more through the 90,000 educators we serve.

See You at The Fall Event: KidsGardening is based at Burlington, VT’s Intervale and will be available to answer questions on your tour of Gardener’s Supply.

The long term vision for the organization is that every child has the opportunity to learn through the garden. To achieve this they support educators with expertise, curriculum, funding, and peer learning opportunities that they wouldn't otherwise have.
