Trends - an interesting observation.

Trends - an interesting observation.

by Danny Summers

Recently I participated in a webinar covering a collection of "trends" across the globe. It was produced by an international company in the business of collecting a tremendous amount of data and trying to put a sense of order to what they see. At first glance, it appeared to be all over the board. Of course, there were lots of modern, high tech gadgets and activities and some trends you recognize as "way-out-there," but one observation began to appear throughout that we should appreciate and leverage in your business. The first comment that led me into this path of thought was:

"We're the same old humans with the same old human needs."

Wow! That, in the middle of a bunch of high-tech, "way-out-there" trends, grabs you and brings you right back down to earth. As you see so many weird new trends, this type of very basic statement brings a sense of grounding. It's a very organic statement if you think about it.

A Marketing Conversation

A Marketing Conversation

by Robert Hendrickson

There’s a reason why reality tv shows are so popular. People like standing in the background watching what takes place in other peoples’ lives. Well, here’s your chance. What follows is an email conversation between a garden center owner and Robert discussing what needs to be considered before making a marketing decision for next spring. Names have been changed but the process Robert knows will work remains.

We Sell Fresh Air!

We Sell Fresh Air!

Observations by Danny Summers

I recently subscribed to a publication devoted entirely to Visual Merchandising and Store Designs for retail (actually its name and acronym is VMSD) and in its December issue that arrived last week, the cover story's headline was "FRESH AIR." You can see the front cover below right.

At first glance you have to ask yourself... "Are they selling plants or other things?"

Loyalty Program Or Just Less Profit

Loyalty Program Or Just Less Profit

by Robert Hendrickson

Something really backwards happened when the industry created so called “loyalty” programs. Instead of garden centers creating programs that would actually show gratitude for their loyal customers’ support, most created kick-back programs with rebates in an attempt to “reward” people already shopping with them. The behind closed doors intent was to create a process that would surely make shoppers loyal to the company by offering them financial “bribes”.

Group Client Advisory: I-9 Compliance

Group Client Advisory: I-9 Compliance

by Seawright & Associates

On Wednesday, November 7th, Seawright & Associates' Jean Martin presented a GROUPtalk-Live webinar for Group Clients titled "Winter is Coming... Prepare for ICE!" This was one of the largest attendance for any GROUPtalk-Live sessions and for obvious reasons. This is a very important subject and it also underscores the importance of having the talents and resources of Seawright & Associates for our Group Centers (a huge benefit of being in The Group). Prior to the session, Jean had supplied both the current I-9 Paper Version Form and Instructions for each participant for note taking.

Making the Emotional Connection

Making the "Emotional Connection"

by Danny Summers

Robert Hendrickson has pushed The Group for years now on some of the very best ways to tell your story and build that unique, emotional connection with the customer. This is the extreme opposite of selling by price and certainly much more effective than selling by the old standard of "feature and benefit" marketing.

The Fall Event 2018 TableTalks

You've told us that some of the most meaningful and productive experiences at The Fall Event are a result of the time you spend getting to know and learning from your peers. So at The Fall Event 2018 we introduced a new format with each session beginning with a speaker presentation, followed by peer-to-peer (P2P) TableTalks and concluding with discussion and Q&A with the speaker. We also had a bulletin board to post Topics of Interest to determine topics for TableTalks during lunch on Tuesday. This resulted in some very interesting topics and dialog. Below you will find a list of the topics and a summary of the discussions.

Cold as ICE!

by Jean Seawright

At the federal level, things have been relatively quiet on the regulatory front with the exception of one agency, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Affectionately known as ICE, this federal agency has an annual budget of approximately $6 billion and employs more than 20,000 employees in over 400 offices in the United Stated and 46 foreign countries. ICE's mission is to "protect America from the cross-border crime and illegal immigration that threaten national security and public safety."

Well Isnt This a Twist in Everybodys Knickers!

Well Isn’t This a Twist in Everybody’s Knickers!

by Robert Hendrickson

While many in the garden center industry seem hellbent on rushing into a business model where they’re unfamiliar, unprepared and undercapitalized to actually create something worth the distraction, Amazon just announced they’re planning on opening 3000 brick and mortar AmazonGo stores to go along with their Whole Foods and bookstore locations. (See the announcement here)

I had just two bosses before venturing into consulting. Both were strong-willed, demanding owners who allowed me to do almost anything in order to grow sales and profits… as long as it worked. I helped the Maryland owner create one of the industry’s top garden centers at the time by constantly being reminded what was required to succeed.

“Business is really quite simple,”he would say… over and over and over.

The Secret To Living A Happy Retirement

The Secret To Living A Happy Retirement

by Wes Moss (a preview to The Fall Event 2018)

We all want to be happy. Why wouldn’t we? Happiness is a wonderful feeling of well-being and contentment. Over the courses of our lives, we set our sights on happiness. As Abraham Lincoln said, “Folks are usually about as happy as they make up their minds to be.”

As a Certified Financial Planner, I help people recognize and work towards achieving their financial goals. I help them with allocating their investments, charting their retirement income streams, and I teach them about the various ins-and-outs of financial planning. I love it. This is the nuts-and-bolts stuff we should all think about when trying to accomplish our financial goals.
