Observations

Observations

by Danny Summers

During your busiest times, I understand how difficult it is to step back to make observations to develop important perspectives. But for Owners and Managers, stepping back during these fast-paced days can be critical and provide the best insights for making important changes.

This is like a major league baseball manager viewing from the dugout, he is reading every move the opposing pitcher is making and directing adjustments for his team.

The image above is of one of my favorite Major League managers, Bobby Cox, and one of Major League Baseball's most successful. He led the Atlanta Braves for 20+ seasons (1990-2010) and his observations and direction led the Braves to a remarkable string of 14 consecutive division crowns that led to five National League pennants, five World Series trips, and one World Series win in 1995. That run began in 1991 when he guided the Braves from "worse to first". They were in last place in 1990 and ended the regular 1991 season in first place. It was a Cinderella-type year. By the way, that year, the Braves lost in a cliffhanger World Series to the Minnesota Twins who also were in a "worse to first" miracle of their own in the American League.

Cox's view from the steps of the dugout, as seen above, depicts the idea of observations for you. It is the perfect example for you, as an Owner or Manager, to step back to help develop observations.

Just like the message last week on Being Creative - Organically, observations can lead to simple ideas that can help your Center and your Team reach new levels. Working more efficiently, and serving your audience better leads to more success.

I know how difficult it is during your busiest weeks to find the time to step back to an observer position, but taking a few minutes each day at the right time can make a big difference.

Just like Bobby Cox did from the dugout, be a student of the game, the manager viewing from the dugout, so you can develop observations to help your Center win the Garden Retailing Pennant!

Take a few minutes each day for observations and then Swing for the Fences!
